Dark Mode Off / On

If you live in a cold state, then a snow day is like going to the amusement park for the day. And a day off for your kids is the icing on the cake. However, having a snow day during this pandemic has been altered a lot from what it used to be.

With remote learning throughout the country, you may feel that your kids may miss out on that feeling of excitement that once was there. Still, that doesn’t mean they can’t wake up on a snowy day and enjoy some snow day activities.

Growing up in a state with snow days

I always looked forward to a snow day in New York because that meant no school. However, New York wasn’t so quick to close the schools back then, and it could be 10 feet of snow before they would think about canceling school for the day.

But when it finally happened, that meant two things: 1) my siblings and I weren’t going to school, and 2) I could do anything I wanted. There were times where my siblings and my brother’s friends would head out in the snow and spend hours having snowball fights and more.

As a child, I couldn’t help but eat as much of the freshly fallen snow as possible. That is until my mom would yell at me to stop eating it. And when we were frozen to the point where we couldn’t move, it was time to head inside to have Swiss Miss hot chocolate with marshmallows.

Snow days were always the best time as a kid, and it’s great to see that nothing has changed.

Outdoor snow day activities

These activities on this list are enough to occupy your kids’ entire day, maybe yours as well.

Sledding

An old-time favorite, sledding down that one hill in the neighborhood you waited all year long to conquer can be loads of fun. Sledding on fresh snow at top speeds and taking chances fills those extreme needs your little daredevil kids may have.

Snowball fights

It may seem violent, but a good snowball fight as a child is loads of fun. Here in New York, if you’re not having a snowball fight, then you’re not having fun. Whether it’s one on one or a large group of neighborhood kids, your kids will spend at least 2 hours making snowballs and tossing them at their friends. Or at least until their little hands turn numb.

Make a snowman or snow angels

If snowball fights are for them, then testing their creativity by building a snowman could be a better activity. The best part about building a snowman is there’s no one blueprint. Whether they create it with one head and two tiers or let their imagination run wild, building a snowman can be loads of fun.

And when they’re done building a snowman, they can plop into the fluffy snow, flap their arms, and have fun making snow angels. Snow angels were always my favorite to make, and they’re simple. It gave me a chance to be covered in snow. The careful part was trying to stand without messing it up.

Arts and crafts

Kids love being creative. And a snowy day where the snow is coming down heavy, different arts and crafts can occupy hours. It’s perfect to have a bunch of arts and crafts such as painting kits, puzzles, and even lego sets for your kids to spend hours stimulating their brains while creating something incredible.

Put on a talent show

A talent show is a great snow day activity for those snowy days where the snow is really coming down. It’s great because your kids get to dress up and show off their talent. From dancing to singing to silly acts, kids love pretending to be someone else. So feel free to give them some of your best clothes, sit back, and enjoy the show.

Build a fort

Grab some old sheets, a couple of chairs, and a bunch of pillows, and your kids have a homemade fort. Forts are great on snowy days because your kids have a nice cozy place to hideout. They can bring their tablets, toys, and even their favorite books for hours of fun. So why not join them and relive your childhood.

Hot chocolate and cartoons

When the snow becomes too much, and their little fingers are frozen, then there’s no better antidote than some hot chocolate with marshmallows and their favorite cartoons. There’s nothing like sitting on the sofa in your pajamas, enjoying your favorite Disney, Nickelodeon, or even cartoon movies all day. It may not be the most productive, but it’s the best way to relax for a kid after a few weeks of school.

Snow days are the best, and the activities for your kids are endless. If they’re lucky, that day could turn into two or three. Then your kids will get to do it all over again.
